Evil Villains, Dancing Moms, and More

Hey, movie lovers,
Why's my avatar dressed like this? Well, everyone wants to talk about either The Dark Knight or Mamma Mia this week, and I was just thinking what a bizarre movie you'd get if you combined them both together: The Joker wants to get married, but he's not sure who his mom is. Or... Batman and Harvey Dent team up to fix Gotham -- with disco outfits and ABBA music! Oh, I crack myself up.

THIS WEEK'S MOVIE NEWS:

OUT NOW:

Whoa... so many reviews this week! You guys had a ton to say about The Dark Knight:

  • SRSLYn00b works at a movie theater, and she says, "We had Batman in 10 FREAKIN' THEATERS! And guess what? ALL SOLD OUT! That's nearly 3000 people, at midnight to see this movie." - SRSLYn00b, via nMail
  • "It's very long... but it's very good." - katinahat, via nMail
  • The Dark Knight was the darkest, most plot-twisting, most insane action movie I've ever seen. - Heylogrl15, in her blog
  • "The only way I can describe it is: Twisted, Crazy, Exciting, and Amazing" - ctluvXO, in her blog
  • "[Heath's] performance doesn't show you his potential; no, his performance fulfils that potential 100 percent. he disappears completely within his role, making you believe that laugh, that face, that he is the joker." - yankee922, in her blog
  • A few more reviews are in Neutron221's blog, hottincali's blog and grab0bag's blog. (Warning: that last one has spoilers.)

And an equally huge number of people reviewed Mamma Mia. Some of your comments:

  • "It was funny, happy, and quite an uplifting and joyful flick."- volleyloli, in her blog
  • "You wanted to stand up in the seats and start dancing and singing along." - smacaroni, in her blog
  • "Amanda Seyfried, the girl who played the main character Sophie, was soooooooo adorable." - onmymind90, in her blog
  • "Meryl Streep should NOT have been in it, I love her, but she didn't add anything to the movie." - 007mahala, via nMail. (She recommends waiting for the DVD.)
  • "It's a hilarious movie with a few scenes that might make you want to grab a tissue, but before a tear can get out, you'll be laughing again!" -Fishstik07, in her blog
OPENING THIS WEEK:
  • American Teen
  • Brideshead Revisited
  • The X-Files: I Want to Believe
OTHER MOVIE BITS:

filmlvrx0 and her friends were trying to make a "Queen Bee Movie Playlist." Besides Mean Girls and Heathers, she recommends checking out a short film called Lick the Star by Sofia Coppola.

Oh, and remember how iluvth90s told us about Fresh Films, that project that holds free filmmaking workshops for teens? She's at the one in Chicago and blogging about it! Meanwhile, KeelyKyni went to the one in Portland, Oregon, and nMailed me that she got to visit a National Guard base while working on an action movie.

Are you making any movies this summer? Last week, I played a background performer in a Columbia University student film. (That means I was an extra. I think "background performer" is such a silly way to describe it, but that's what they called us!)

Hoping your week is Joker-nightmare free,
The-Lisa

Russia considering making Emo ILLEGAL.

So, I guess the Mexican Emo Wars were just the first battle in what's going to be a worldwide confrontation. Russian lawmakers are now trying to make emo illegal, because it is a "'negative ideology' [that] may encourage depression, social withdrawal and even suicide," according to the UK Guardian, who say that the lawmakers define emo kids as "12-16 year-olds with black and pink clothing, studded belts, painted fingernails, ear and eyebrow piercings, and black hair with fringes that 'cover half the face'."

As to what they actually plan to do to stop emo from existing (gluck with that, hons!), they would regulate emo websites and ban emo fashion from schools and government buildings. So.... if I have black and red clothing, piercings, a studded belt, and black hair with fringes that cover only 40% of my face... is that allowed?

I think I need to go lie down, my head hurts.

Your thoughts?

Luv,
The-Mary

Goss Up

  • A bunch of FBI agents are going to be reading Anne Hathaway's private diaries in the investigation against her ex, and she had to change all her numbers so he couldn't call her, and it all sounds just about as sucky as humanly possible.
  • Word has leaked that Nick Jonas and Selena Gomez are dating, though everyone is denying it.
  • John Mayer and Pete Wentz did lunch. Are they doing any music collabos? That would be fun.
  • Amy Adams (from Enchanted and Junebug) is engaged.
  • And no idea what Danny Radcliffe did for his 19th birthday yesterday, sorry. Which I guess means he kept it low key, which is nice.

Thing du Jour: Pepsi Can Purse

poohbecca1 tipped us off to this one. We love how it straddles that line between "your 7 year old sister" and "badass new wave chick." Here's the link.

The secret lives of cats.

Random, but: This guy strapped a camera to his cat. And now we know for sure: when the cat's away, the... cat will go meet other cats and hang out under cars a lot, evidently.

There are a couple different "trips" up on the guy's site... I love how the cat has this totally active cat social life in random places that the owner guy doesn't even know exist!

Goss Up

  • Golden Girl Estelle "Sophia" Getty passed away yesterday at the age of 84.
  • More totally unsubstantiated details about the Christian Bale v. Mom kerfuffle: some say he didn't lay a finger on her, just insulted his wife; some say he pushed her out of the way.
  • Here's your RDA of My Shia LaBeouf. Just Shia'ing around town, looking Shia.
  • Yeah, so, I just pretty much burst a blood vessel reading this one. I almost didn't even want to include it, but: Brooke Hogan said on the radio that because she, Brooke Hogan, has "emotions and stuff", that it's just cuh-razy for a woman to run for president. Well, let's see, Brooke. Your brother nearly killed his best friend due to reckless driving, and he has boy parts, so, I guess based on that, no man should be president either! So no more presidents until we find something other than a boy or a girl to put up there! Wait, I have an idea! How about no HOGANS should be president, and let's leave it at that.
