How Compassionate Are You?

It can be a challenge in middle school and high school to stay compassionate, because sometimes social pressure to step on toes and dis-or-be-dissed and all that other nonsense can get in the way. So, how often do you rise above it? Do you put yourselves in others' shoes? Do you find yourself wanting to help someone who needs it? We've got questions, you've got answers.

You and a bunch of friends are all staying over at someone's house one night. You wake up in the middle of the night and hear one of the guests talking in their sleep about something really embarrassing. Are you going to tell people?

I would tell everyone, first thing, over breakfast.
I wouldn't bring it up, but if someone else mentions it I'd say what I heard.
I would never. I would be so upset if someone did that to me.

Have you ever walked up and said "hi" to a new student who looked lonely or lost?

Sure. That's a stinky situation to be in. It's nice to make people feel welcome.
It depends on whether they look cool or not.

When you get to be a senior in high school, which do you picture yourself doing?

Giving all the freshmen a hard time; it's tradition!
Giving the freshmen a hard time for like a day, just as a joke. Nothing too mean, though.
Being nice to the freshmen. I've never really gotten the point of all that teasing and stuff.

Do you think dogs have emotions?

No, they're animals. They can't feel stuff.
I don't know. I've never been a dog.
You'd have to be crazy to think they don't.

You've just started going out with your long-time crush and could not be more psyched. On the bus, you're talking about it with your friend, when you realize that the person sitting in front of you is someone who also had a huge, not-so-secret crush on your new bf/gf. You:

talk louder, so they know what the score is. The girl/boy is MINE.
tone it down a little. I know what it's like to be on that side of a crush. This probably isn't much fun for them to listen to.
keep talking as I was. It doesn't really have anything to do with me.

You're picking teams for basketball in gym class. It's down to two kids: a pretty good player who should have no trouble getting picked, and a quieter, less athletic type who looks humiliated to be standing there and is possibly on the verge of tears. You:

Pick the second kid. He could use the ego boost, and it's just a game.
Pick the first kid. The point is to pick the better player.

Your mom comes home from work looking extra tired and frazzled. Dinner's not ready yet. You:

don't get on her back about dinner just yet; it looks like she needs some quiet time.
offer to make us all some sandwiches or microwave something.

Your class is throwing a benefit for homeless children. On that same night, your absolute, total and complete favorite actor is doing a book-signing at a local mall. Which do you go to?

The benefit. It would be hard, but in the end I think charity is more important than autographs.
The book-signing; sue me. My being at that benefit won't make that much of a difference.

You're on your way to lunch. A girl you don't know too well, but who is different from you (you think she's kinda weird, or she's preppy and you're not) has just dropped a mess of books and papers all over the hallway. Do you stop to help her pick them up?

I guess so, unless I'm hungry.
Of course, lunch can wait. It's just simple courtesy.
No, I'm sure she can handle it herself.
Probably not... if she were a friend of mine I would, though.
